The Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court Loose Records microfilm index is a project by the Tuscaloosa Genealogical Society (TGS) with support from the Tuscaloosa County governmental officials, the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) and the Genealogical Society of Utah.
The objectives of the project were to locate, index and microfilm the circuit court loose records. This index includes divorce cases, ex parte cases for the removal of non-age, and estate cases transferred from the Probate Court to the Circuit Court.
From 2004-2007, volunteers donated more than 2350 hours to the project to produce this index. At the beginning of the project, the volunteers expected to work with cases from 1923-1950. Cases from earlier years were later discovered in the courthouse attic. Many of these are incomplete and some have duplicate case numbers. These are included in the index, identified by the letter "A" (years 1889-1900) or "B" (years 1897-1916) preceding the case number. For this index, volunteers read each case and listed the names of complainant and respondent, case number, type case, date and any other names and how they related to the case.
The Tuscaloosa County loose records that were transferred to the Alabama Department of Archives and History prior to 2004 are not included in this index.
The Genealogical Society of Utah microfilmed the cases included in this index. The microfilm is available at the Tuscaloosa Public Library (TPL), Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) and may be ordered from any LDS Family History Center.
